We are staying in the Triana area about two blocks from Vegueta, the historic heart of Las Palmas that founded the city of Las Palmas in the late 1400's. We started our walk in this part of town and enjoyed seeing the architecture and the many squares. A number of the streets here are pedestrian only.
The Plaza de Santa Ana features Government offices and the impressive Cathedral of Las Palmas. The Cathedral construction started in 1497 and was not completed until the late 1990's, hence the mixed architectural styles.
As we were leaving, we noticed people in the bellower and realized we could take an elevator up for a nice overview of this area of Las Palmas.
Next stop was the Canarian Museum, a large archeological collection of the pre-hispanic past. I tried to negotiate for a double discount because were were both seniors and unemployed but the lady at the ticket counter wouldn't go for it but thought I was funny.
Nice displays and a good english audio guide was provided.
The spookiest part was the skull room.
Leaving here we started back toward Triana and came upon a traditional folk group performing in the square. Very entertaining and the local crowd sings along and dances. Apparently this group has been doing this for 50 years (with various members)
After watching a few numbers we continued along looking for a cafe and stopped here for some tapas.
Now rested, we decided to walk the main street of Triana again. Lots of people out for a Sunday afternoon.
We then headed to the waterfront and walked a couple km on the recreational trail and got some views of the harbour activity. There seem to be a lot of oil drill boats moored here and I will have to investigate why they are in harbour. There were also 5 cruise ships in port.
We walked as far as the municipal marina and I spent an hour walking around looking at the boats. There are currently a large number of cruising and racing sailboats congregating here for the upcoming start of the 2018 ARC event. An annual race/cruise to St. Lucia in the Caribbean with about 300 boats participating. One of my friends crewed on a boat in this event 29 years ago!
We stopped for a beer at the marina then walked back to the apartment.
At about 8:00 pm, we went out for some more tapas for supper at a little restaurant just down the street.
After that we walked around for a few blocks and enjoyed the streets at night.
