We left Las Palmas at about 10:00 am heading south to our final destination, the little town of Puerto de Mogan.
We had arranged a 3:00 pm check-in so we had a little time to kill on our way there.
I had heard about this unique spot called El Bufedero on the rugged coastline not far from Las Palmas where there was this "hole" that filled and emptied with the waves if you got there at the right time on the tide cycle. I had no idea what the "right time" was but decided it was worth a slight detour off the freeway to check it out. The tidal range here is about 9 feet so I thing we got lucky and arrived at a time where the waves were just overtopping the hole enough to fill it then draining it. With the big waves, it produced a geyser!
After almost getting swamped by a wave while videoing the action, we left and continued south taking another detour to the Maspalomas resort area. The big feature here (other than the nude beaches) are the extensive sand dunes. We strolled a bit of the boardwalk and had a good view of the area. It was windy and it looked like a lot of effort to walk the km or so to the beach so we were content to just sit for a while.
We drove to the north end of the beach which is jammed with restaurants, beach and souvenir shops and Senegalese hawking their fake watches and purses along the promenade. This was a bit of a mash up of Key West, Venice Beach with a bit of Munich thrown in. Not too many on the beach because of the wind but we did find a German restaurant along the promenade and enjoyed watching the people while eating lunch.
On to our destination, the fabulous highway continued until ending at Puerto de Mogan. The owner of our villa was waiting for us and ushered us into our underground parking and up to this fabulous apartment/villa.
Puerto de Mogan is dubbed "The Venice of the Canaries" due to its canals and brightly trimmed low rise villas. Definitely a lower key higher end little town than the major resort areas to the east such as Maspalomas. There is a nice yacht harbour and a fairly compact protected beach. lots of places to buy a Rolex or other expensive designer goods. We had time to walk around and get our bearings before it got dark. When I mentioned small town, everything is within a four block walk with steep cliffs on each side.
We decided we needed a change from Tapas and went across the street to an Asian restaurant for supper.
