Time to move on to the southern part of the island and hopefully some warmer, drier weather. Our destination is Arona in the resort area of Playa de Americas.
The first quarter of the trip was on what I would call a freeway, easy drive with a 120 kph speed limit although the Seat had trouble keeping up on some of the hills.
We stopped for a few hours at the north shore town of Puerto de la Cruz. This has been a popular tourist destination for years, especially for German tourists. The first thing we noticed was the black beach, this sand was not imported from the Sahara and is typical of natural beaches on the island.
The waterfront has a fabulous multi-pool water park. Some of the pools get recharged with the breaking waves. I think this is a municipal facility with a reasonable admission price.
There is a nice promenade along the waterfront and plenty of shops and restaurants.
The Plaza Europa features a newer waterfront plaza and some of the restored fortifications.
There were also some "free" swimming areas buffered from the breaking waves.
Shortly after leaving the town, the road became a narrow two lane adventure crossing the rugged terrain climbing a few thousand feet with hundreds of turns. After reaching the high point, the freeway returned and we essentially coasted the last 20 km all the way down to sea level at our destination, Arona.
We have an apartment close to the beach. We rented this one on VRBO and met the owner's agent in the parking lot. Not a bad place for a resort area. Lots of activity here even though it is not prime tourist season.
We had time to walk to the beach on our way to the grocery store. Looks like there are several beaches to choose from and a nice boardwalk/promenade for long walks.
