Road Trip to Tejeda

When we awoke this morning, we discovered a huge market being set up in the square just outside our balcony. It looked like lots of people starting to gather so after breakfast we walked over to have a look. There were probably a hundred booths set up by the Senegalese to sell crap. Fake handbags, fake scarves, fake watches, fake sunglasses, fake t-shirts, fake shoes, fake, fake, fake.

The only booth that was sort of interesting was this fellow who was making morning mojitos with this antique machine that crushed real sugar cane to extract the sugar syrup. Sort of cool although it was too early in the day to sample one.

After sitting around for the last couple of days it was time for a road trip. We decided to drive to Tejeda to see some of the interior of the island. Here is the route we followed.

It doesn't look too bad on the small scale plot but when you zoom in, this is what the road looked like for about 70% of the distance.... All 1st & 2nd gear at 30 kph.

A few big vehicles on the road but thankfully no tour busses. You use the horn at every corner.

The road follows the valley up past the town of Mogan that you see in the distance.

There were plenty of places to pull over and get a good view of the rugged landscape.

Here you can see the hillside village of Tejeda in the distance. At this overlook, we ran into a Shepard and his dog who willingly tried to point out all of the significant landmarks to us in Spanish and sign language.

We arrived in Tejeda and found a place to park at a restaurant where have had a great authentic village lunch. Surprisingly, the owner spoke very good English and was a very good host.

After lunch we wandered the winding streets of the village. Not a bad view anywhere with looming cliffs and deep gorges in the distance.

We decided to follow an alternate route back to Puerto de Mogan and followed the Fatago Valley back towards Maspalomas. Again, some great Miradors!
